A Quilted Shawl – Prototype

Quilted Shawl - PrototypeIn my last podcast I talked about designing something to submit to Moda Bake Shop and I thought I’d let you see a few photos of the first prototype for it.  I’m going to be tweaking several things to get it how I want it to look but I think my first try wasn’t too bad.

Charm squares are from Garden Song by Nancy Halvorsen for Bentatex fabrics.  I used almost all of the squares from two packs.  The backing is a sheet I had as I didn’t have enough flannel in one piece to cover the back but wanted something soft.

Quilted it with decorative thread and stitching after turning it inside out so I didn’t have to bind it.  My next one I’m going to do a traditional binding on, I think it’ll look nicer and quilt out better.

  1. LOVE IT. How about a pic of you wearing it, so we can see what it looks like on? I've been wanting a quilted shawl to wear on cool market mornings, looks like you've come up with a great one! Let me know if you need a pattern tester!

  2. I didn't have a good spot to set up my camera with me wearing it – I'll model the next version for sure and would love your help as a pattern tester before submitting it to MBS. 🙂 Thanks Linda!

  3. This is such a cool idea. I am starting to obsess over quilting projects, there are so many neat ideas I have never even considered before. I will definitely add this to the to-do list!

  4. Hi Katie. I love the shawl – I have never seen one made of patchwork, great idea. I love the way it is easy piecing but having the decorative stitches lifts it to another level. Very subtle but gorgeous. Hope the other versions go well and you get the thumbs up from Moda. C
