Quilting Modern and Letting Go

My Madrona Road challenge quilt is quilted! I’m a bit rusty so I’m calling this “wonky quilting” and I’m okay with letting go a bit for this one. I think this quilt will end up on my office wall in the end and I love how free it is. You know how sometimes you look at a quilt and it just seems uptight? I like to think this quilt is the antithesis of that. It’s my first modern quilt and I love it.

The leaves were raw edge appliqued down just by quilting on top of them. Easy! They’ll get raggy over time. I brushed the edges out a bit with my fingernails to get them started.

I wanted to keep the squares that the string leaves were cut out of and turn them into blocks. It was fun quilting leaves inside the open areas.

  1. Katie isn’t it great to be free? Your lucky you found that so early in your quilting career. Creativity has no rule or boundaries. I found this for myself when I visited the Gee Bend quilts when they were in Baltimore some years back. Sure if you want to enter a show certain criteria must be met and that’s fine, although that’s not my thing I do it for fun not to make money and not to be judged. I’m sure I speak for many that you are giving us older quilters lots of inspiration with all your quilting energy and enthusiasm. The leaf is beautiful. I love the quilting on it.

  3. Very cool and creative!

  4. Excellent!

  5. Beautiful job Katie! I really like it.

  6. I love the design of the quilt, and the wonky quilting as well. Honest, you know where every mistake is, but no one else will ever notice.

  7. I love how this quilt is turning out. I don’t think your quilting looks wonky at all – it’s awesome!

You did a great job quilting. It looks great.. you are fearless…!

  9. I love it Katie!!!! The edges of the appliqued leaves will be so scruffily after a few washings or just with time. My “Happy Howlidays” quilt is like this with the scruffily (yep, making that a word now) blocks and I love it!

  10. This is beautiful! I love the leaves and the quilting, and the colors!

  11. You did a beautiful job! I love it!

I love the quilt. What free motion pattern is that? Is it from Leah day. Inspiring. How long have you been doing free motion.

    • It’s some sort of swirl pattern – I’ve used it on a few of my quilts. I think Leah Day has a video on it or something similar?

I’ve been doing free motion for a few years now, I’m not a master but I can do simple designs. Just takes lots of practice.
