WIP Wednesday – Experimentation and Nostalgia

I haven’t been doing a lot of sewing the past few weeks. I’m slowly getting back into the groove of things though. I did a bit of experimentation with some Pigma Paintstiks on fabric. That was interesting to play around with. The bottom of the feather I drew directly onto the fabric with the Paintstiks and towards the top I put the paint onto a stencil brush and brushed it on. I like the look at the top better – it almost looks airbrushed on. The corgis are enjoying the new couch. I’ve decided to start a new quilt this year. I’m participating with the Reddit Quilters group and will be working on the Super Mario...

“Wander” – The Hot Air Balloon Quilt

Saturday morning I had a burst of inspiration and decided to make a small, scrappy hot air balloon. I had no idea how I was going to use it or if it would ever be finished into a quilt. I just wanted to enjoy the process of making something unexpected out of the blue again. I pulled out some of my favorite blue and green scrap fabrics and set to work doing some machine applique.  I used my favorite turquoise 50 wt cotton Mako Aurifil thread for the balloon top and a light brown 50 wt cotton mako Aurifil thread for the basket. I was really happy with how it turned out, wonky basket and all....

Ticker Tape Applique Quilt Finish

This quilt is a sample for a class I’m teaching next Quarter. I love how it came together and enjoyed the process of making it so much. It would work for a large or small quilt and is perfect for using up all sorts of scraps.  I pieced, appliqued, quilted inside the white part of the blocks and did the binding with Aurifil 50 wt. mako thread. The colored areas of the block borders were done with various embroidery threads I had on hand, I wanted something really shiny to make it pop. It was quilted on my Pfaff Powerquilter 16.0 (“Anne). Bernie hopes you are enjoying your Christmas morning too!

Small Project Updates

Sorry I’ve been AWOL – going through some personal stuff right now and I haven’t been in a good place to blog or podcast.  I’m not sure when that will change  so I appreciate any support you can give in the meantime. I finally felt like doing some quilting earlier this week and I got a few things done and made progress on others.   I love the progress I’ve made on my ticker tape blocks. Two more and I’ll have 9 blocks to sew together for the top. I think it is going to be a fun class to teach.   Tinkerbell got a binding! It took me several days to decide what binding fabric...

Tinkerbell Quilt progress

My Tinkerbell Quilt got a border on last week (boy I haven’t done a mitered border in a while!).  I also took the time to quilt the center and do the applique stitch before Kismet broke. Unfortunately I probably won’t bind her until I get Kismet back. I love how it’s looking so far though! Download the Tinkerbell Applique Template for free here! I quilted the center using Aurifil 50 wt. Cotton Mako on my new Pfaff Powerquilter 16.0. I also used two layers of batting to get that texture that I love so much. I also worked on prepping some ticker tape applique blocks for a class I’m teaching next quarter. Really looking forward to...

More Butterfly Quilt Progress and Playing with Metallic Thread

Anne and I are getting along famously working on the butterfly quilt together. I finished quilting the sashing and border and decided to quilt the inside of all of the wings with different colored metallic threads. I did have to change my needle from a Size 100 to a 110 for it to work better but once I did that it was smooth sailing. The metallic threads offer a subtle touch to the wings. I’m going to add hotfix crystals when I’m done with everything. So all I have left to do is some microstippling in the white panels, quilting in the antenna and then trimming and binding! I’m debating whether to add hanging tabs across...

Feathers, Feathers and the Butterfly Quilt

This is a UFO that’s over 2 years old and I decided to pull it out and work on the darn thing so I could get a better feel for Anne. I’ve had The Butterfly Quilt hanging in my closet for a while after I worked on the center panel.  (See my photos from 2011 on this project when I first started quilting it).  I got nervous overthinking the quilt after I quilted the center section and was seriously worried if I got back to it I’d screw it up. After practicing some feathers on Anne and a scrap sandwich I pulled it out and stuck it under the needle. This quilt has some interesting areas...

Meet Anne – My Pfaff Powerquilter 16.0

Yesterday I got the call I was waiting for… “Katie your Powerquilter is here!” and I’m surprised I didn’t get a speeding ticket going to pick it up on my lunch break. We wrangled it into the car and I couldn’t wait to get home to set it all up that night.   My husband was convinced the machine was going to fall on me and kill me during the setup process (he was at work so I did this on my own). Overall it was fairly simple to setup and get going. Most of it came pre-assembled and you only had to hook up a few things. I think the bobbin winder took the longest...

Big news… new machine coming soon!

While teaching my Lonestar class I got to take a break and try out the new Pfaff Powerquilter 16.0 that Tess had just brought back from the Pfaff Get Creative! event. It’s very similar to a Sweet Sixteen.  I was impressed with how smoothly it quilted, the table space it has and that I’d be able to continue to use my FMQ skills without skipping a beat. So the choice came down to – do I take a cruise next year or invest in a machine for my studio. I decided to go for it. She’s ordered and will be here in 3-4 weeks!   I didn’t get the stitch regulator but I can always add...
