Playing In-The-Hoop, class previews

I didn’t do much sewing last week so I tried to make up for it yesterday. I needed to do two pincushions for a swap I’m participating in and decided to do a few extra mini-pincushions in case they didn’t like the cactus ones. You can get the cactus design from Urban Threads. First I made a practice one for myself. This is Sam – he sits in a mini Terra cotta pot. My thread tension wasn’t 100% perfect on any of these, I was using felt but it mostly looks okay. They’re fun to make but a bit time consuming to put together between the stuffing, stitching opening closed and gluing into the pot. Because...

A little bit of sashiko

I’ve had a collection of sashiko designs in my embroidery folder on my PC for a while and tonight I finally had an excuse to stitch one out! I’m in the “Taste of the Orient” mini quilt swap and needed to do my quilt before the deadline hits in a few days. I picked out a cherry blossom sashiko design from Embroidery Library and got everything setup to stitch it out. I think it turned out pretty good! My binding leaves a bit to be desired but it is difficult to bind tiny objects. This one is about 6″ square. I think it is really sweet! I hope my partner likes it too.

Swap Item reveal and a jelly roll race quilt

My swap partner for the Ugly Fabric Swap Part 2 received her item so I can reveal what it was now! I picked up a black messenger bag and did some embroidery on top. I think the little dolls turned out cute! I thought the name would be bigger but at least it didn’t come out looking wonky.  My partner was pleased with her item so that makes me happy. Since the last podcast I got a wild hair and decided to pull out a jelly roll and do a jelly roll race 1600 quilt.  I’m happy with how it turned out! Mom if you’re reading this and you want to be surprised for Mother’s Day stop reading...

Two UFOs Transformed

I just finished packaging everything up for my final swaps for this year.  One of the swaps was easy, just some 2.5″ Jelly roll strips to mail out (already had lots cut so just had to pick and choose colors) but the other one required some work. I just transformed them into some mug rugs! You can see the front and the back here: Remind me to never do a hexagonal binding again please.  I didn’t even think about the difficulty of that before quilting the hexagons! It was hard to get those mitered corners.   The quilting was a circular feather motif that I had a template for.  I added an outline to the inside...

Swap Updates and upcoming swaps

The Quiltcast Supergroup Swap group has lots of fun swaps coming up!  Our last swap for the year is a Mug Rug swap and the signup deadline for that is today, November 1. Each person will send out two mug rugs, one to each partner, based on the partners preferences listed in their profile if they have any.  You can be as creative as you like!  Mug Rugs are great practice for building quilting skills as you do all the steps for quilting but on a much smaller scale. We are taking December off so everyone can work on their own holiday projects without distraction. Next year I already have several swaps planned through March. Many...
