First an update: Physically I’m bouncing back quickly from my hospital/ventilator experience. Back at work full time and I’m able to get around pretty good. Walking up stairs is still somewhat challenging, my quads feel like I’ve done a bunch of lunges and become like jelly anytime I try to climb stairs. It’s a little easier each time though.

Emotionally I still haven’t dealt with what happened. I don’t know when I’m going to do that yet. I can’t decide how I’m going to do it and keep waffling back and forth on the method (Do I journal it out? What about designing? Sketching? Just talking through it with someone? Can I quilt it out?). So I’m a little stuck in my head on that aspect of this recovery. I still have moments when I’m driving and my mind drifts to something I experienced in the hospital and I’ll start sobbing until I can stuff it back down to deal with later.

I haven’t felt inspired to really start a project or continue working on a new one. I have an idea but no motivation to start working on it. Right now I sort of feel adrift looking for land. I know with time it’ll pass.

And some photo updates of what I’ve been up to! A little bit of quilty stuff but mostly getting back to everyday life.

My fabric from the Reddit Fabric Exchange! Love all the fun text prints my partner sent me.

I attended an Aurifil lecture with Alex Veronelli at The Cotton Patch Quilt Shop in Sarasota, Florida. I’m amazed at what it takes to make one spool of thread and the care that goes into it! If you have a chance to attend one of his lectures I recommend going.

I survived a pretty scary ordeal. I’ll pepper in some quilting stuff as I can but this will be a more personal episode.

Penny Candy Jar - Fabric Scrap Storage Organization
I’ve always adored the people that organize their scraps in colorful jars but never jumped on board because… well have you looked at the price of large glass jars lately? Even the pretty apothecary jars cost an arm and a leg. I’m not lucky enough to stumble upon a whole bunch at a thrift store so I’ve been blindly searching off and on over the years to see if I can find anything somewhat affordable. Well I finally found something that looks great and doesn’t cost a ton! These are the Core One Gallon Penny Candy Jars and depending on how many you buy at a time, they can be had for less than $6 each. Compare that to other jars that are upwards of $17 each and you can easily get two or three at the price of one jar! These gallon jars are HUGE and hold a ton of scraps.

I’ve never ordered from a restaurant supply online store before but this site shipped quickly and my purchase was protected by Google so I felt okay trying it out. They arrived *mostly* unharmed, you can see some of the lid handles are a little worn. Nothing was broken (these are REAL glass and heavy) and they come in boxes of four at a time.  I don’t mind the worn handles overall though, it kind of gives them a vintage feel. I feel like I got what I paid for. One jar for each color (I might get a few more for neutrals, not sure yet) and one jar for my selvages! It’s nice having a selvage jar.  Definitely happy with my new scrap storage solution!

The last week and a half I’ve been battling whatever Phlegmy plague has been traveling around my office. I’m finally on the tail end of it so I’m hoping I can record another podcast episode soon when I can talk without coughing! Here’s what I’ve been up to:

I’m still working on hanging quilts up in my studio. This is a Tinker bell Quilt that I did a while ago with the intention of using it as a Disney Pin Trading display quilt. I love how it looks with all the pins put on! Lots more room for new ones too.

And we recently went to the Magic Kingdom so I was able to meet Tink in person! I also got my turkey leg fix.

I’m making lots of progress on my Technicolor Galaxy block #1. So far all my pieces are glued down and now I’m ready to make and apply my bias tape. I enjoyed digging through my stash and pulling out fabrics I’ve been holding on to. Glad they are getting cut up and put to use!

Untitled

I’ve started playing with my serger some more and tackled a section from my Serger class from Craftsy. I made a boxy bag on my serger start to finish! It was so easy and fun. I’ll be doing lots more of these.

I’m getting used to my serger. It’s really easy to thread. I’m taking a serger class next month to learn more on how to use it.

Earlier this month my husband and I took a roadtrip down to Sarasota for some Amish food and shopping. I saw an article in Quilt Sampler magazine about a shop called The Cotton Patch that had in-house Basset Hounds and had to go!! (This also works as a great bribery tactic to get my husband to go with me – he wants to pet anything cute and furry.)

It’s a great shop with friendly staff, a good selection of fabric and a nice size classroom. They also sell Pfaff, Juki and Bernina machines! I loved looking at the Juki longarm. Here are a few photos from my visit:

Fred is the shops newest basset hound – recently adopted from a rescue. He is 9 months old and super friendly! He was very excited to see us. The other bassets didn’t feel like getting up from their naps to say hello so they continued sleeping in the back room. Who can blame them?  If you don’t see the Bassets when you walk in you can ask if they can come out to say hello to you. That’s what we did!

I’m getting back into the groove of things finally. After the holidays and all that craziness I’m starting to go through some of my quilting stuff while I’m designing new things in my head. My husband is going back on his old shift so I can go back to my usual quilting routine! Here are some photos of things I’ve been up to the last month or so.

The corgis and I had a quiet Christmas together. It was warm and humid in typical Florida fashion. Bernie let me take a few photos of her in her dress before I took it off.

I got my first pieces of Le Creuset in my favorite color!

My Hip Kitty t-shirt was stitched out the morning of the January Tampa Modern Quilt Guild meeting because I felt like I needed a new shirt. It turned out super cute!

Finally hung the curtain rod in my living room so I can display quilts easily. Corgi Fairytale is home and finally on display. I love being able to look over at it from the couch.
