I’ve been itching to post this tutorial since I finished it over the weekend! This was a fun tutorial I did for Therm-o-web demonstrating my favorite glue stick to use for ticker tape applique. My hairstylist is a huge mermaid fan and after seeing her for years I decided it was time to make something special in a mermaid theme. I hope you enjoy it!

It will not stop raining in Florida for more than about 20 minutes at a time. I managed to dash outside and hang this up so I could photograph it for the Modern Quilt Guild Michael Miller Challenge and get it submitted before the deadline. I’m very excited with the way this quilt turned out! Probably one of the few times it came out just like I imagined it in my head, all the way down to the quilting.  This quilt is 100% Michael Miller fabrics and I quilted it using 40wt Aurifil thread for the teal background and used a little bit of 50wt white thread for the dresdens. I quilted this on my Pfaff Powerquilter 16.0 and used a Handiquilter Versa Tool for the straight line work.

I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

What is Massdrop?

Massdrop is a group buy website that helps you get a large discount on popular items. Once enough interest is shown in an item or group of items they go to the company and negotiate a group buy discount. As more and more people sign up to participate in the “drop” the price goes down! Each drop is open for a certain number of days before they close it and place the order for the items. Then you receive your discounted item in the mail, usually with free shipping!

What sorts of crafting items do they offer?

Recently completed drops include: Aurifil thread kits, Designer fabric collections, Quilter’s Dream Batting, rotary cutters, Tula Pink ribbon, Oliso irons, and Moda precuts. They add new crafting items every week!

I have an idea for a group buy! How do I tell them about it?

Create a poll then you can share your poll with your friends by tweeting or posting the link on Facebook. Once it gets enough votes the folks over at Massdrop look into making it a new drop! You can also check on active polls to see if someone has already created a poll similar to your idea so you can vote on it.

Upcoming deals: Alison Glass Thread and Fabric Sets!

Massdrop will be offering the Alison Glass Aurifil thread set and Field Day fabric bundles starting July 20th! I’m getting close to having Hopscotch Lane finished.  I completed the quilting portion last weekend and put the binding on a day later after I trimmed it. I assumed I’d have plenty of time this week to do the hand binding at home but several things threw a wrench in my plans so I’ll be rushing today to get that done. I really wanted to do a “finished” post for this quilt next. Oh well!

Hopscotch Lane - quilting in progress

50% done with the fill quilting (at the bottom of the quilt) and all of the straight line quilting was finished in this photo.

Some progress pix with captions for detail:

We’ve had some really bad storms come through Tampa lately. This is Bernie’s “I’m freaking out” face.

I have a blurb in an article of the August/September issue of Quilters Newsletter on how to price a quilt for sale. Lots of other great quilters are quoted too giving sound advice on selling your quilts. I recommend this issue a lot!

I splurged for my upcoming birthday and got a set of eyelash extensions put on. Loving them so far – I feel like one of those babydolls with the long lashes and the blinky eyes.

I took the boys to a corgi birthday party at a waterpark last weekend and they had such a blast! Here are some fun photos:

My First One-Star Podcast Review http://katiesquiltingcorner.com/2014/06/one-star-podcast-review.html http://katiesquiltingcorner.com/2014/06/one-star-podcast-review.html#comments Thu, 19 Jun 2014 14:10:34 +0000 http://katiesquiltingcorner.com/?p=3839 {Read More} ]]>

One-star-review

I realize the podcast quality hasn’t been up to snuff lately with everything I’ve had going on. My heart just hasn’t been into it hence the longer gaps between episodes – and then I get reviews like this that further discourage me trying to get back into podcasting.

If you’re gonna leave a one star review I don’t see why you have to do personal attacks or assume you know something about someone after listening to 8 minutes of a random episode. Maybe I should stop talking about my personal life in my episodes altogether.

Edit: Thanks for the comments of support and the kind words on Facebook, the blog and Twitter! Other podcasters have been getting nasty comments or bad reviews too, Lori wrote a great post about all the quilty podcasters giving us all some much needed love. I know ya can’t please everyone it just astounds me when people think it’s okay to be rude like this to someone they don’t even know.

I’ve been in a flurry of sewing ADD. I probably have about 5 different projects scattered around my room right now in various states of being finished. I did get a few things finished this past weekend though.

This cute hedgehog is an in-the-hoop stuffed toy I decided to try because I was participating in a Plushie swap. I will say I was disappointed with the instructions provided with the file but I managed to get the toy done without much fuss. She turned out cute and I was able to use up some scrap minkee I had floating around in my sewing room.

I finished my first Amy Butler pattern! This is the large Honeybun Pouf. I underestimated the amount of stuffing it would need given that I had several bins overflowing with scrap batting I thought it would completely fill it up. Nope! I will be adding bean bag filler tonight to finish it off. I’d definitely make another one even though they are darned time consuming. All the fabrics used were home dec remnants I had lying around so I didn’t have to purchase any batting or fabric for this project. I even had the button kits to make the covered buttons in my drawer!

I’ll take better photos of the pouf when it’s filled up all the way. I was just so stinking excited to have it done.

Summer is here so that means the tropical storms are coming. We can have bad rainstorms and flooding without even having to have a hurricane system come through. This was from a week ago and it took out all of our internet equipment in the house (router, switches, everything).

One of our summer visitors (we have hundreds around the yard)

Lastly – Craftsy is having a huge summer sale! If you’ve been waiting for your class to go on sale it’s probably on sale now. Take advantage!
