The last week and a half I’ve been battling whatever Phlegmy plague has been traveling around my office. I’m finally on the tail end of it so I’m hoping I can record another podcast episode soon when I can talk without coughing! Here’s what I’ve been up to:

I’m still working on hanging quilts up in my studio. This is a Tinker bell Quilt that I did a while ago with the intention of using it as a Disney Pin Trading display quilt. I love how it looks with all the pins put on! Lots more room for new ones too.

And we recently went to the Magic Kingdom so I was able to meet Tink in person! I also got my turkey leg fix.

I’m making lots of progress on my Technicolor Galaxy block #1. So far all my pieces are glued down and now I’m ready to make and apply my bias tape. I enjoyed digging through my stash and pulling out fabrics I’ve been holding on to. Glad they are getting cut up and put to use!

Untitled

I’ve started playing with my serger some more and tackled a section from my Serger class from Craftsy. I made a boxy bag on my serger start to finish! It was so easy and fun. I’ll be doing lots more of these.

I’m getting used to my serger. It’s really easy to thread. I’m taking a serger class next month to learn more on how to use it.

Earlier this month my husband and I took a roadtrip down to Sarasota for some Amish food and shopping. I saw an article in Quilt Sampler magazine about a shop called The Cotton Patch that had in-house Basset Hounds and had to go!! (This also works as a great bribery tactic to get my husband to go with me – he wants to pet anything cute and furry.)

It’s a great shop with friendly staff, a good selection of fabric and a nice size classroom. They also sell Pfaff, Juki and Bernina machines! I loved looking at the Juki longarm. Here are a few photos from my visit:

Fred is the shops newest basset hound – recently adopted from a rescue. He is 9 months old and super friendly! He was very excited to see us. The other bassets didn’t feel like getting up from their naps to say hello so they continued sleeping in the back room. Who can blame them? If you don’t see the Bassets when you walk in you can ask if they can come out to say hello to you. That’s what we did!

I’m getting back into the groove of things finally. After the holidays and all that craziness I’m starting to go through some of my quilting stuff while I’m designing new things in my head. My husband is going back on his old shift so I can go back to my usual quilting routine! Here are some photos of things I’ve been up to the last month or so.

The corgis and I had a quiet Christmas together. It was warm and humid in typical Florida fashion. Bernie let me take a few photos of her in her dress before I took it off.

I got my first pieces of Le Creuset in my favorite color!

My Hip Kitty t-shirt was stitched out the morning of the January Tampa Modern Quilt Guild meeting because I felt like I needed a new shirt. It turned out super cute!

Finally hung the curtain rod in my living room so I can display quilts easily. Corgi Fairytale is home and finally on display. I love being able to look over at it from the couch.

WIP Wednesday – Adventures in Airbrushing http://katiesquiltingcorner.com/2014/11/wip-wednesday-adventures-airbrushing.html http://katiesquiltingcorner.com/2014/11/wip-wednesday-adventures-airbrushing.html#comments Wed, 19 Nov 2014 13:47:55 +0000 http://katiesquiltingcorner.com/?p=3936 {Read More} ]]>

My journey in airbrushing has been a frustrating one. When I first got the idea for this technique I had never airbrushed anything except makeup onto my face and I wasn’t sure how it would work out. I didn’t know much about airbrushing equipment, paint, airbrush guns or what the advantages/disadvantages are between gravity feed and siphon feed. The first air compressor I bought wasn’t suited for the job so I had to return it and get a new one. Come to find out… in order to keep constant pressure going in your airbrush gun while you paint you need a compressor with an air tank attached. Once that problem was sorted out, I got an Iwata Siphon Feed gun to quickly change out paint colors and I was finally ready to experiment for real.

My idea was that I could take any shape, cut it out in freezer paper, iron it onto fabric and paint around it to create a resist design. I didn’t know how the freezer paper would hold up with paint being sprayed directly on it (would it curl up? Would it fall off?) and I wasn’t sure how the paint coverage would be.

Well I got lucky. I cut my feather pieces out of the freezer paper using my Accuquilt Go! feather die which made it go really quickly. Placement was a bit difficult but I think for the most part it turned out pretty even for a test sample.

I played with some of the quilting to get a feel for what worked and what didn’t.

So now I’m stuck in my head designing a quilt around this technique. It’s a fun place to be!

In early October my husband and I took a fun trip to NYC. It was our second time there and the weather was much better this time around. I wasn’t quilting the first time we went in 2003 so this trip was my first time hitting up fabric and quilting stores. I got lucky and one of my longtime readers and friends was able to join me! Kati and her fiance Attila joined us for a fun Sunday shopping around NYC. Our first stop was a huge trim store called M&J Trimmings. Floor to ceiling ribbons, buckles, buttons, lace…. you name it they have it if its a type of trim.

I bought some lace and some hot fix crystals and Kati got some wooden buttons for a Christmas ornament project she’s working on. Then we headed up to The City Quilter – the only quilt shop in NYC. They buzz you in the door when you arrive.

The City Quilter has a lot of really current fabric collections around the shop and some other fun samples and projects.

Purl Soho was our next stop. It’s in a very trendy neighbhorhood and focuses mostly on yarn and needlework. There are some fabrics there and other cute little projects. Kati recommended it and I’m glad we went!

During our trip we did quite a few things – a Circle Line night harbor cruise, we attended tapings of both The Colbert Report and The Daily Show, hit up the Top of the Rock for some great morning sunrise photos over the city and had a delicious food tour of Chelsea market. I know both of us were exhausted by the end of the trip (we mostly walked and took the subway everywhere). Really had a fabulous time! Here is a slideshow with all the photos from my trip:
