My journey in airbrushing has been a frustrating one. When I first got the idea for this technique I had never airbrushed anything except makeup onto my face and I wasn’t sure how it would work out. I didn’t know much about airbrushing equipment, paint, airbrush guns or what the advantages/disadvantages are between gravity feed and siphon feed. The first air compressor I bought wasn’t suited for the job so I had to return it and get a new one. Come to find out… in order to keep constant pressure going in your airbrush gun while you paint you need a compressor with an air tank attached. Once that problem was sorted out, I got an Iwata Siphon Feed gun to quickly change out paint colors and I was finally ready to experiment for real.

My idea was that I could take any shape, cut it out in freezer paper, iron it onto fabric and paint around it to create a resist design. I didn’t know how the freezer paper would hold up with paint being sprayed directly on it (would it curl up? Would it fall off?) and I wasn’t sure how the paint coverage would be.

Well I got lucky. I cut my feather pieces out of the freezer paper using my Accuquilt Go! feather die which made it go really quickly. Placement was a bit difficult but I think for the most part it turned out pretty even for a test sample.

I played with some of the quilting to get a feel for what worked and what didn’t.

So now I’m stuck in my head designing a quilt around this technique. It’s a fun place to be!

In early October my husband and I took a fun trip to NYC. It was our second time there and the weather was much better this time around. I wasn’t quilting the first time we went in 2003 so this trip was my first time hitting up fabric and quilting stores. I got lucky and one of my longtime readers and friends was able to join me! Kati and her fiance Attila joined us for a fun Sunday shopping around NYC.   Our first stop was a huge trim store called M&J Trimmings. Floor to ceiling ribbons, buckles, buttons, lace…. you name it they have it if its a type of trim.

I bought some lace and some hot fix crystals and Kati got some wooden buttons for a Christmas ornament project she’s working on. Then we headed up to The City Quilter – the only quilt shop in NYC. They buzz you in the door when you arrive.

The City Quilter has a lot of really current fabric collections around the shop and some other fun samples and projects.

They also have a shelf of special NYC themed fabric.

Purl Soho was our next stop. It’s in a very trendy neighbhorhood and focuses mostly on yarn and needlework. There are some fabrics there and other cute little projects. Kati recommended it and I’m glad we went!

During our trip we did quite a few things – a Circle Line night harbor cruise, we attended tapings of both The Colbert Report and The Daily Show, hit up the Top of the Rock for some great morning sunrise photos over the city and had a delicious food tour of Chelsea market. I know both of us were exhausted by the end of the trip (we mostly walked and took the subway everywhere). Really had a fabulous time! Here is a slideshow with all the photos from my trip:

Sorry for going dark for so long! I haven’t been up to much sewing or quilting hence the absence. Get ready for a big photo post so I can catch up.

I did a little fun sew day with some Modern Quilt Guild friends a few weeks ago.

We visited The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida for some inspiration. Our guild is having a design challenge based on the art we saw that day. I got some cool photos! It’s a really neat museum.

I did teach a few classes and my students turned out great projects.

Last weekend I took a day off from work and headed up to Epcot for some fun on a dreary Florida day. It rained most of the time we were there but we enjoyed it anyway. The food and wine festival was going on so we got to sample some interesting foods. My absolute favorite thing is the Disney Turkey Leg! I had to get one first thing. Ringo snapped this photo of me enjoying my turkey leg:

I’ve been itching to post this tutorial since I finished it over the weekend! This was a fun tutorial I did for Therm-o-web demonstrating my favorite glue stick to use for ticker tape applique. My hairstylist is a huge mermaid fan and after seeing her for years I decided it was time to make something special in a mermaid theme. I hope you enjoy it!

It will not stop raining in Florida for more than about 20 minutes at a time. I managed to dash outside and hang this up so I could photograph it for the Modern Quilt Guild Michael Miller Challenge and get it submitted before the deadline. I’m very excited with the way this quilt turned out! Probably one of the few times it came out just like I imagined it in my head, all the way down to the quilting.  This quilt is 100% Michael Miller fabrics and I quilted it using 40wt Aurifil thread for the teal background and used a little bit of 50wt white thread for the dresdens. I quilted this on my Pfaff Powerquilter 16.0 and used a Handiquilter Versa Tool for the straight line work.

I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

I’m getting close to having Hopscotch Lane finished.  I completed the quilting portion last weekend and put the binding on a day later after I trimmed it. I assumed I’d have plenty of time this week to do the hand binding at home but several things threw a wrench in my plans so I’ll be rushing today to get that done. I really wanted to do a “finished” post for this quilt next. Oh well!

Hopscotch Lane - quilting in progress

50% done with the fill quilting (at the bottom of the quilt) and all of the straight line quilting was finished in this photo.

Some progress pix with captions for detail:

We’ve had some really bad storms come through Tampa lately. This is Bernie’s “I’m freaking out” face.

I have a blurb in an article of the August/September issue of Quilters Newsletter on how to price a quilt for sale. Lots of other great quilters are quoted too giving sound advice on selling your quilts. I recommend this issue a lot!

I splurged for my upcoming birthday and got a set of eyelash extensions put on. Loving them so far – I feel like one of those babydolls with the long lashes and the blinky eyes.

I took the boys to a corgi birthday party at a waterpark last weekend and they had such a blast! Here are some fun photos:
